Child and Family Counseling

age 4 and up

"Is my son or daughter too young for counseling"?

Children, like any of us, have troubles and worries.  Sometimes their troubles and worries are bigger than they know how to express or manage.

A child may have experienced separation or divorce of their parents, the loss of a loved one or even a pet, low self-esteem, low self-confidence, an alcoholic or addicted parent.  They may be struggling in school with academics, or struggling with their relationships with friends or family members.  These are all common issues that many children struggle with.

Because children do not always have the words to explain what is troubling them, at Heart and Soul Counseling, we help them sort out issues through play, art, movement, storytelling, and sand play. Guided, therapeutic play, art, movement, sand play and storytelling along with Cognitive Behavioral and Solution Focused therapies are all effective methods that child therapists use with children.

Parent/Guardian/Family Counseling

Sometimes as a parent or guardian you may not be sure whether or not professional help is really necessary.

We recommend you set up an appointment to discuss issues and challenges.  We can help you determine whether or not individual and/or family sessions would be the next step, provide suggestions for different approaches, and identify resources that may be helpful.

As a child's parent or guardian you can make a difference in your child's behavior by changing how  you respond to it.  Parents or guardians can benefit by scheduling an appointment for themselves.

We can assist you in:

  • Initial depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD  screening;
  • managing aggressive behavior in young children;
  • establishing limits and consistency in follow    through;
  • dealing with non-compliance or defiance;
  • challenging family environments;
  • single or shared parenting;
  • distinguishing between typical behavior and real problems;
  • increasing positive and effective communication.

Testimonials

"I wanted to first thank you for counseling my children! You are amazing with them and it's incredible how much I found out about what is going on in their little hearts and minds in our last visit, without them even realizing it."
